How to Add a Starbucks Gift Card to the App & Pay With Your Phone
Updated June 2026 β Step-by-step instructions for iPhone and Android, including balance transfers, auto-reload, mobile order & pay, and troubleshooting.
TE Guide Framework: This guide follows our methodology: Setup (add the card), Configure (transfer, auto-reload), Use (pay at the register and mobile order). Every step tested on iOS 19 and Android 16 in June 2026.
Why Add Your Starbucks Gift Card to the App
Physical Starbucks gift cards are easy to lose and impossible to track once lost β unless they are registered. Adding your card to the Starbucks app gives you:
- Balance protection β registered cards can be replaced if lost or stolen
- Mobile payment β scan your phone instead of carrying the physical card
- Starbucks Rewards β earn 150 Stars per $1 spent (2x Stars on double-star days)
- Balance transfers β consolidate multiple gift cards into one
- Auto-reload β never hit a zero balance at the register
- Mobile order & pay β order ahead and skip the line
Step 1: Download and Set Up the Starbucks App
iPhone (iOS 16+)
- Open the App Store and search for "Starbucks".
- Download the official Starbucks app (green siren logo, by Starbucks Corporation).
- Open the app and tap Create Account or Sign In.
- Enter your email and create a password. Verify your email via the confirmation link.
- Once logged in, you see the "Home" tab with your Stars count at the top.
Android (8.0+)
- Open Google Play Store and search for "Starbucks".
- Install the official Starbucks app (same green siren logo).
- Open the app and create an account or sign in with your existing credentials.
- Grant camera permission when prompted β needed for scanning gift card barcodes.
- The home screen shows your Stars balance and nearby stores.
Step 2: Add Your Gift Card to the App
There are two methods: scan the card or enter the numbers manually. Both work identically once added.
Method A: Scan the Barcode
- Tap the Account icon (person silhouette) in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Starbucks Cards (or "Cards & Payments" on older versions).
- Tap the + button in the top-right.
- Hold your physical gift card in front of the camera. The app scans the barcode on the back.
- The card number and security code auto-fill. Tap Add Card.
- Your balance appears instantly. The physical card and the app card now share the same balance.
Method B: Enter Numbers Manually
- Go to Account β Starbucks Cards β tap +.
- Tap Enter Card Number Manually (below the camera viewfinder).
- Type the 16-digit card number from the back of your physical card.
- Type the 8-digit security code (also on the back, beneath the scratch-off area on some cards).
- Tap Add Card. The balance loads and the card is now in your app.
Important: Register Your Card
After adding the card, make sure it shows as Registered in your account. Registered cards have balance protection β if you lose the physical card, Starbucks can transfer the balance to a new one. Unregistered cards cannot be recovered.
Step 3: Transfer Balances Between Cards
If you received multiple gift cards, consolidate them into one to avoid juggling cards at the register:
- Go to Account β Starbucks Cards.
- Tap the card you want to transfer from.
- Select Transfer Balance.
- Choose your primary card as the destination.
- Enter the amount to transfer (or transfer all).
- Confirm. The transfer is instant β no fees or limits.
You can transfer a minimum of $0.25 per transaction. No maximum transfer limit. The source card stays in your account at $0 balance (you can delete it afterward).
Step 4: Set Up Auto-Reload
Auto-reload ensures you never have a zero balance when ordering. Choose a threshold and reload amount:
- Go to Account β Starbucks Cards β select your primary card.
- Tap Auto-Reload or Setup Auto-Reload.
- Choose the reload amount: $10, $25, $50, or $100.
- Set the threshold (when balance drops below this amount, it reloads): $10 or $25.
- Select payment method: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover.
- Confirm. Your card reloads automatically whenever the balance dips below your threshold.
Example: Set $25 reload when balance drops below $10. If you buy a $6 latte and your balance goes from $11 to $5, the app automatically adds $25 bringing you to $30. No action needed at the register.
Step 5: Pay at the Register With Your Phone
Once your gift card is in the app, you never need the physical card again:
- Open the Starbucks app.
- Tap the Card icon at the bottom (or swipe right on the home screen).
- Your barcode appears on screen with the current balance.
- At the register, hold the barcode face-up toward the scanner.
- The scanner reads the barcode, deducts the amount, and you earn Stars automatically.
No need to unlock your phone or open Apple Pay / Google Pay β the Starbucks app barcode scanner works with the screen on and the app open. The barcode refreshes every 60 seconds for security.
Step 6: Use Mobile Order & Pay
Mobile order lets you skip the line entirely. Your gift card balance funds the order:
- Open the Starbucks app and tap Order at the bottom.
- Browse the menu and add items to your cart.
- Select your pickup store (shows estimated wait time).
- Tap Checkout. Your primary Starbucks card is the default payment.
- Confirm the order. The app shows your pickup location and estimated time.
- Walk in, pick up your drink at the mobile order shelf β no waiting in line.
Starbucks App vs Apple Pay / Google Pay
| Feature | Starbucks App | Apple Pay / Google Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Earn Stars | Yes (150 Stars/$1) | No (linked card only) |
| Use Gift Card Balance | Yes | No |
| Mobile Order & Pay | Yes | No |
| Auto-Reload | Yes | Via bank (not gift card) |
| Balance Protection | Yes (registered cards) | N/A |
| Works Internationally | No (country-locked) | Yes (at Starbucks abroad) |
Use the Starbucks app for everything domestic (Stars, gift cards, mobile order). Use Apple Pay or Google Pay when traveling internationally since Starbucks gift card balances are country-locked.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Gift Card Not Adding to the App
- Check the card number: 16 digits, no spaces. The security code is 8 digits, usually on the back below the barcode.
- Check if already registered: If someone else added this card, you cannot add it to a different account. Contact Starbucks customer service (1-800-STARBUCKS) if you believe the card was assigned to the wrong account.
- App version: Make sure you have the latest version from the App Store or Play Store. Older versions sometimes fail to scan barcodes.
- Camera permission: On iPhone, go to Settings β Starbucks β make sure Camera is enabled. On Android, Settings β Apps β Starbucks β Permissions β Camera.
Barcode Not Scanning at the Register
- Increase screen brightness: The scanner needs a bright screen. Turn brightness to maximum.
- Remove screen protector: Some privacy screen protectors block barcode scanners. Try peeling it back or using manual entry.
- Refresh the barcode: Close and re-open the app. The barcode refreshes every 60 seconds. If expired, a new one generates.
- Ask the barista to type the number: If the scanner truly cannot read your screen, the barista can manually enter your 16-digit card number.
Balance Not Showing Correct Amount
Pull down on the home screen to refresh the balance. If it is still wrong, sign out and sign back in. Balances sync from Starbucks servers β they may take 30 seconds to update after a transaction. If a recent purchase is not reflected, wait 2 minutes and refresh. If the issue persists, call 1-800-STARBUCKS with your card number ready.
Auto-Reload Not Triggering
Check that your payment method on file has not expired. Go to Account β Starbucks Cards β Auto-Reload β Payment Method. If your credit card expired, the auto-reload silently fails with no notification. Update the card and the next time your balance drops below the threshold, it will reload. Also confirm auto-reload is toggled ON (it can be accidentally turned off).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a Starbucks gift card to the app?
Open the Starbucks app, tap Account, select Starbucks Cards, tap the + button, then scan the card barcode or enter the 16-digit card number and 8-digit security code manually.
Can I combine multiple Starbucks gift cards?
Yes. Add all cards to the app, then use the Transfer Balance feature to move money from each secondary card to your primary card. No fees, instant transfer.
What if I lose my physical Starbucks gift card?
If the card was registered to your Starbucks account, the balance is safe. Just use the app to pay or request a replacement. Unregistered physical cards cannot be recovered.
Can I use my Starbucks app balance in another country?
No. Starbucks gift card balances are country-locked. A US card does not work in the UK, Canada, or Japan. You need a local card for each country.
Does auto-reload work with Apple Pay?
Yes. You can set up auto-reload with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or any Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover card. Choose your payment method in the auto-reload settings.
How many Stars do I earn per dollar?
You earn 150 Stars per $1 spent when paying through the app. Double-star days (promoted in the app) give 300 Stars per $1. Stars are not earned when paying with Apple Pay or Google Pay directly.
