Reddit Video + Audio: Why Reddit Splits Them
Reddit stores video and audio as separate streams. When a user uploads a video to Reddit, the platform creates two files: a video-only MP4 and a separate audio file (usually M4A or WebM audio). This is why many Reddit video downloaders return video without audio - they only fetch the video stream. Our tool merges both streams back into a single MP4 file with synchronized audio. This process happens server-side, so you get a proper playback-ready file without needing any video editing software. Reddit uses DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) for video delivery, which splits media into chunks. Our downloader reassembles these chunks and merges audio in one step.
Is It Legal to Download Reddit Videos?
Downloading Reddit videos for personal offline viewing is generally considered fair use. However, redistributing downloaded content, using it commercially without permission, or claiming it as your own may violate copyright law and Reddit's terms of service. Always respect the original creator's rights. Do not re-upload someone else's content without their explicit permission.
Legal Considerations
- Personal use - offline viewing for personal consumption
- Fair use - non-commercial, transformative, limited portion
- Terms of Service - Reddit prohibits downloading without permission
- Copyright - creator retains rights; downloading doesn't transfer ownership
- Commercial use - always requires explicit license

GIF
Traditional animated GIF format. Large file sizes, limited to 256 colors per frame, no audio. Reddit no longer accepts direct GIF uploads - all animated uploads are converted to GIFV.
GIFV (MP4)
Reddit's GIFV format is actually an MP4 video file with the animation loop behavior of a GIF. Much smaller files, true color, and optionally audio. These are what this tool downloads as MP4.

Common Reddit Download Issues - Fixed
Video Not Downloading
If your Reddit video wont download, make sure it is a public post. Check that you copied the full Reddit URL, which should look like "reddit.com/r/ subredditname/ comments/...". Try refreshing and pasting a fresh link.
Download Failed / Error Message
Error messages appear when Reddit has made system changes or when videos have expired. Our system updates regularly to handle changes. Try a different quality option. Wait 30 seconds and retry. Some very old posts may no longer have available video files.
Low Quality Output
Reddit compresses videos heavily. Our downloader extracts the best available quality from Reddit CDN. Some posts only have lower-quality options. Select 1080p when available, but many Reddit videos are capped at 720p or lower due to Reddit compression.
Works on Desktop but Not iPhone/Android
iOS Safari blocks some downloads. After tapping Download, tap the share icon and choose "Save to Files" to keep the video. Android Chrome downloads directly to Downloads. If mobile downloads fail, use our PWA version for better compatibility.
Which Quality Should You Download?
| Quality | Best For | File Size | Device |
|---|
| 1080p Full HD | Best quality available | 50-200 MB | All devices |
| 720p HD | Most Reddit videos | 20-80 MB | Phone, tablet |
| 480p SD | Quick sharing | 10-30 MB | Old devices |
| GIF Format | Memes, social media | 1-10 MB | All devices |
| Audio Only | Podcasts, voice posts | 1-5 MB | All devices |
Reddit uses aggressive video compression to save bandwidth. Most videos are available in 720p or lower. Choose the highest quality available for the best viewing experience. Our downloader also extracts audio from Reddit videos - select Audio Only to get MP3 files. Reddit GIFs are converted to video format at the original resolution and work as standard video files on any device.
Reddit Video URL Formats This Tool Supports
Reddit uses several URL formats. This tool supports them all:
reddit.com/r/subreddit/comments/.../title/ - Standard Reddit post URL (recommended)reddit.com/gallery/... - Gallery posts (downloads the first video/gif)reddit.com/s/... - Shared links from the mobile appold.reddit.com/r/subreddit/comments/.../ - Old Reddit URL formatv.redd.it/... - Direct video URLs (extracted from page source)
For best results, paste the full post URL (comments page) rather than the direct video URL. The post URL contains metadata the tool uses to match audio and video streams correctly.

Reddit Download Tips and Tricks
Batch Downloads
Download multiple Reddit videos at once using our Batch Downloader.
Downloading Reddit GIFs
Reddit GIFs download as MP4 video files at the original resolution. GIFs are converted to video for better compatibility across devices. The file will work on any device that plays video. Select GIF format to keep the looping animation if preferred.
Downloading r/Subreddit Videos
Any video from any subreddit downloads the same way. Copy the full post URL (including r/subredditname). Videos from popular subreddits like r/aww, r/funny, and r/gaming download reliably. Some subreddits may have removed videos.
Downloading Reddit Cross-Posts
Cross-posted videos download using the current post URL. The downloader gets the video from the original post. Cross-post quality may differ from the original. Use the original post URL if the cross-post has issues.
