iOS 14 Status – NOT REALLY!

There is not an iOS 14 jailbreak, for 99% of devices. Checkra1n was released to include preliminary iOS 14 jailbreak support. However, this cannot be stressed enough, it only includes support for A9X and below. This means that the ONLY devices that can jailbreak iOS 14 right now are as follows:

  • iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and SE
  • iPad 5th generation
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 4
  • iPad Pro 1st generation
  • Apple TV 4 and 4K

This is because in addition to the aforementioned devices falling under the umbrella of the limited checkra1n jailbreak, iOS 14 changed things. Now Apple has basically added extra security precautions in iOS 14. In layman’s terms, they’re more or less leveraging the Secure Enclave on A10 and higher to block jailbreaking. Now, in iOS 14, if the secure enclave (on A10 and newer) detects a request to decrypt user data, it will cause the device to panic. This is very tricky stuff on Apple’s security front in an attempt to block checkra1n.

What can Jailbreak iOS 14?

This means that the iPhone X (the newest device supported by checkra1n’s bootrom exploit) isn’t covered by this release. In fact, as stated above, nothing past the iPhone 6s is! This is very bad for jailbreakers who relied on checkra1n.

However don’t fear, all hope isn’t lost, the recent blackbird vulnerability has enabled the checkra1n team to gain control over the Secure Enclave on both A10 and A10X CPUs. This will allow them to effectively disable the previously mentioned new mitigation techniques in iOS 14. The team reports that they expect this to “be ready in the coming weeks”.

Development takes time. Soon enough, checkra1n will be able to jailbreak iOS 14 for more devices supported by the main checkm8 vulnerability, which is NOT patched. This is because their processors have a hardware flaw in them that cannot be patched by Apple. While checkra1n does not currently work with iOS 14 for the vast majority of devices, it will at some point soon pending said updates. While this is easier said than done, it definitely won’t be nearly as complex as developing an entirely new tool. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE on SEPROM Exploit for Secure Enclave

Luca Todesco had the above to say regarding the potential of including an SEPROM exploit in checkra1n. Note that he mentions “we were able to at least reclaim all but 8015 with it” – 8015 refers to T8015. This is the A11 CPU that powers the iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus. This is likely an exploit derived from the aforementioned blackbird vulnerability.

Downgrade iOS 14 to Jailbreak?

A13 Jailbreak iOS 14

Matters are further complicated by the fact Apple is no longer signing iOS 13.7. If you’re at all interested in jailbreaking, avoid updating to iOS 14 until we have a better indication that a solution is on the horizon.

Newer devices however, such as the iPhone XS and iPhone 11, will require more work. They will need what’s known as a kernel exploit, which is not nearly as low-level as the checkm8 exploit in checkra1n, and is therefore easily patched by Apple. For this reason, it’s crucial that your device maintains a jailbreak-able firmware. With iOS 14’s release, it’s recommended that you avoid updating until we have guidance from developers. The window will be small, but we will know in advance which iOS 14 firmware is most suitable for jailbrekaing. This page will let you the second an iOS 14 jailbreak is on the horizon. Bookmark it!

Jailbreak iOS 13.5.1 – iOS 13.7

Jailbreak iOS 13.5.1 iOS 13.6

iOS 13.5.1 through 13.7 Status – NO!

There is not an iOS 13.5.1 – iOS 13.7 jailbreak for all devices. Newer devices, again like the iPhone XS and iPhone 11, are not able to jailbreak any public firmware higher than iOS 13.5. This is because Apple patched the latest unc0ver jailbreak with the release of iOS 13.5.1. What is stated above in iOS 14’s jailbreak status is just as much true for iOS 13.5.1+ on newer devices. Also, an iOS 13.7 vulnerability exists that could potentially be exploited and result in an updated version of unc0ver. However this is very unlikely, as iOS 13 in general will be superseded shortly by iOS 14. We expect the next jailbreak will target an iOS 14 release, not iOS 13.5.1 – iOS 13.7. Of course, as always, this could change – the jailbreak situation is dynamic, never static. Bookmark this page and we’ll let you know the second anything changes!

However, for older devices, there is a jailbreak for both iOS 13.5.1 – iOS 13.7. This should come as no surprise if you’ve read the above status’. Checkra1n can jailbreak iOS 13.5.1 – iOS 13.7 on the iPhone X and older. To jailbreak iOS 13.5.1 – 13.6, simply visit our checkra1n jailbreak tutorial (click or tap here).
