Ultra Bonus Week 3 has arrived as a result of the Global Community Challenge earlier this summer, and while the big news of the day is that Gen 5 is arriving in Pokémon GO, there’s also a bonus past that. That would be the arrival of shiny Mewtwo at long last, one of the most coveted Pokémon in the game, now in shiny form.
Shiny Mewtwo will be going live in Tier 5 raids later today when the Ultra Bonus starts at what should be 4 PM ET if the other past weeks are any indication. This version of Mewtwo will also have the unique move Psystrike, in case a shiny version wasn’t motivation enough to capture him.
Unlike some of the other shinies out there, shiny Mewtwo is definitely noticeable as he has his colors flipped from purple to green, making the difference clear. If past raid shiny rates are any indication, there’s about a 5% spawn rate for shiny Mewtwo in these raids, meaning one out of every 20 raids might get you a shiny Mewtwo to try to catch.Today In: Innovation
This is much different than Community Day which has about the same rate, but far, far more encounters and they’re easier to catch than a high powered raid boss. But this runs all week long, so you should have plenty of chances. There should also be “raid hours” at some point this week where Mewtwo appears in loads of raids in a given hour, upping your chances further. This happened for Deoxys and the Legendary Beasts, so I assume it will happen for Mewtwo as well.
Besides Mewtwo, Gen 5 Pokémon Klink will also show up in raids this week. Additionally, Gen 5 shinies Patrat and Lillipup will be around as the first shinies from that region to arrive, in addition to all the other “normal” Pokémon showing up this week as Gen 5 launches.
Shiny Mewtwo is kind of the holy grail for many Pokémon GO players, so this should be an exciting week to say the very least. After this, if Mewtwo does return to raids eventually he will have a chance at being shiny, but this may be the only week ever to get a shiny Mewtwo with Psystrike, so take advantage while you can.
As a reminder, Mewtwo is a psychic type that can be best fought by ghost, bug and dark types. Here’s a decently solid list of Mewtwo counters as you try to hunt him down this week:
- Tyranitar (Dark Moves)
- Mewtwo (Shadow Ball)
- Scizor (Bug Moves)
- Gengar (Dark/Ghost Moves)
- Houndoom (Dark Moves)
- Weavile (Dark Moves)
- Dusknoir (Dark/Ghost Moves)
- Honchkrow (Dark Moves)
Though at this point you may have your own anti-Mewtwo squad you like. Those are just a few of my favs. Happy hunting!
