How to Download Videos from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu & Prime in 2026
Want to save movies and shows from your streaming subscriptions for offline travel, commutes, or low-signal areas? Here's how each major platform handles downloads β and what third-party tools can and cannot do.
Why Streaming Downloads Are Different
Unlike YouTube or social media where videos are served as standard MP4 files, streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Prime Video use DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption. The video stream is encrypted with technologies like Google's Widevine, Microsoft's PlayReady, or Apple's FairPlay. Your device decrypts the video in real time as it plays, but the raw file never exists in a downloadable state.
This is by design. Streaming studios license content with strict distribution terms β allowing users to download and keep permanent copies would violate those agreements. The official offline download feature built into each platform's app is the only legal and reliably working option.
Netflix β The Largest Offline Library
Netflix introduced offline downloads in 2016 and now supports it on iOS, Android, and Windows (Microsoft Store app). Most Netflix originals and a large selection of licensed titles are available for download β look for the Download arrow icon next to any title.
- Expiry: 30 days unplayed, 48 hours after you start watching
- Quality: Standard and High options in app settings
- Device limit: Up to 100 downloads per device, number of devices depends on your plan (1-4)
- Tip: Use the "Smart Downloads" feature β Netflix auto-deletes watched episodes and downloads the next one over WiFi
Limitation: No desktop downloads on Mac or Linux. Some licensed titles (especially studio movies) may be restricted from download. The library varies by country due to regional licensing.
Disney+ β Best for Family Offline Viewing
Disney+ offers offline downloads on all plans including the ad-supported tier. Nearly the entire library β Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic, and Disney classics β is available for download.
- Expiry: Most titles never expire once downloaded; some licensed content has a 30-day window
- Quality: Standard (SD) and High (HD) in settings
- Device limit: 10 registered devices, unlimited downloads per device
- Tip: IMAX Enhanced titles download in the expanded aspect ratio on supported devices β check the IMAX tag before downloading
Disney+ also supports GroupWatch with downloads β everyone in the group can watch the same downloaded content simultaneously. This is unique among streaming platforms.
Amazon Prime Video β Flexible Storage Options
Prime Video offers offline downloads on iOS, Android, and Fire Tablet. Most Prime Originals and rented/purchased titles are downloadable. An interesting advantage: Prime Video lets you choose where to save downloads, which is rare among streaming apps.
- Expiry: 30 days after download, 48 hours after play starts. Rentals expire per the rental window (usually 48 hours after first play)
- Quality: Good, Better, Best β choose based on your storage space
- SD card support: Yes β change download location in Settings β Storage
- Tip: You can download to an external SD card on Android, which is great for long flights when you want 10+ movies without filling internal storage
One quirk: Prime Video downloads sometimes fail to sync across devices. If you download on your phone, the same title won't appear in your tablet's downloads β you'll need to download separately on each device.
Hulu β Limited but Improving
Hulu offers offline downloads only on its ad-free plan. If you're on the ad-supported tier, the download button won't appear. This is a deliberate limitation β Hulu's business model relies on ad revenue, and allowing offline playback would bypass ad delivery.
- Expiry: Standard 30 days / 48 hours after play
- Quality: Limited to standard quality β no HD download option
- Library: Most Hulu Originals are available; licensed shows vary
- Tip: Hulu downloads don't include Live TV content β only on-demand titles from the streaming library
Hulu's download feature is the most restricted of the four. If offline viewing is critical, the ad-free plan upgrade ($18.99/month as of 2026) is required. Even then, the library gaps for licensed content are larger than Netflix or Disney+.
The DRM Wall: Why Third-Party Tools Can't Help
You'll find websites claiming to "download Netflix movies in 4K" or "save Disney+ shows to MP4." These are almost always scams. The underlying DRM β Widevine L1 for HD content, PlayReady for UHD β makes it mathematically impossible to extract the decrypted video stream without breaking encryption laws.
What these sites actually do:
- Screen recording: Captures your display in real time, limited to 720p max, often with dropped frames and sync issues
- Malware bundling: "Downloader" apps that install adware, miners, or steal login credentials
- Credential phishing: Sites that ask for your Netflix/Prime login β they steal your account
- Fake downloads: Serving unrelated files or low-quality camrips instead of actual platform content
Even screen recording has been blocked by many apps. Netflix and Disney+ detect recording software and show a black screen or trigger HDCP errors. The bottom line: there is no safe, reliable third-party tool for streaming service downloads.
Offline Viewing Tips for Travel
- Download before you go: Start downloads overnight on WiFi before your trip. Five feature-length movies at HD quality use roughly 5-8GB of storage.
- Check expiry dates: Netflix downloads started on day 1 of a trip may expire before you fly home. Download in batches mid-trip if you have hotel WiFi.
- Use an SD card: On Android, set your default download location to an SD card. This keeps your main storage free for photos and apps.
- Manage storage wisely: The Netflix app shows how much space each download uses. Delete watched episodes immediately to free room for more.
- Download across multiple apps: Save movies from different platforms to cover library gaps β Disney+ for family movies, Prime Video for originals, Netflix for documentaries.

What About Screen Recording?
Native screen recording on iPhone (iOS 18+) and Android (Android 15+) can capture streaming content, but with significant quality trade-offs. iOS records at 1080p max (and locks to 30fps for DRM content), while Android drops to 720p when DRM-protected video is on screen.
The bigger issue: Audio is often missing or out of sync. iOS screen recording captures system audio, but many streaming apps route audio through a protected output that the recorder can't access. The result is a silent video or one with audio from the phone's microphone picking up the TV speakers.
Screen recording is fine for quick clips and personal reference, but it's not a real solution for building an offline library. The official in-app download feature is always superior.
