Video Quality & Resolution
1080p (Full HD)
A video resolution of 1920ร1080 pixels, the most common HD standard. Most YouTube and TikTok content is available in 1080p. It offers a good balance of quality and file size for mobile and desktop viewing.
4K (2160p / Ultra HD)
A video resolution of 3840ร2160 pixels โ four times the detail of 1080p. YouTube and Vimeo offer 4K on many videos. 4K files are significantly larger (often 1-3 GB for a 5-minute video).
8K (4320p)
A video resolution of 7680ร4320 pixels โ the highest quality available on YouTube. Very few devices can display 8K natively, and file sizes can exceed 5 GB for short clips. Downloads require fast internet and significant storage.
720p (HD)
A video resolution of 1280ร720 pixels. Often used for mobile streaming to save data. Downloads at 720p are typically 30-60 MB for a 5-minute video.Download 720p YouTube videos โ
Bitrate
The amount of data processed per second of video, measured in kbps or Mbps. Higher bitrate means better quality but larger file size. YouTube typically uses 8-50 Mbps for 1080p-4K content.
Frame Rate (FPS)
The number of images displayed per second. Standard is 30fps; 60fps is common for gaming; 24fps is cinematic. Higher FPS means smoother motion but larger files.
SD (Standard Definition)
Video resolution of 480p or lower (typically 640ร480). Rarely used today except for legacy content. Downloads are very small (10-20 MB for 5 minutes).
Video Codecs
Codec
Software that compresses and decompresses video. Common codecs include H.264, H.265, AV1, and VP9. The codec determines quality, file size, and device compatibility.
H.264 (AVC)
The most widely supported video codec โ works on virtually every device, browser, and player. YouTube uses H.264 for 720p-1080p downloads. Best choice for guaranteed compatibility.Download H.264 YouTube videos โ
H.265 (HEVC)
A newer codec that offers 50% better compression than H.264, but licensing restrictions limit browser support. Common on Apple devices and for 4K Blu-ray.
AV1
The newest open-source video codec (by the Alliance for Open Media). 30% more efficient than VP9. YouTube increasingly uses AV1 for 4K and 8K. Most 2020+ devices support it in hardware.
VP9
Google's open-source video codec, used for YouTube 4K and 8K content before AV1. Supported by Chrome, Firefox, and Android. Not supported on older Safari versions.
Container Formats
MP4
The most universal video container format. Works on all devices, browsers, and players. Combines H.264 video with AAC audio. Best for downloads meant to be shared or played anywhere.
MKV (Matroska)
A flexible container that can hold multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and video codecs. Common for high-quality movie downloads and anime. Supported by VLC, MPV, and most desktop players (not Safari).
WebM
An open container format designed for the web, optimized for VP8/VP9/AV1 codecs. Used by YouTube. Smaller than MP4 but less compatible with media players.
MOV
Apple's container format, used by QuickTime and iPhones. High quality but large file size. Can contain H.264 or H.265 video.
FLV (Flash Video)
A legacy Adobe Flash format, now obsolete. Some older YouTube content still uses FLV. Modern downloaders convert FLV to MP4 automatically.See our downloader tools โ
Audio Formats
MP3
The most popular audio format. Compressed lossy audio at 128-320 kbps. Compatible with every device. Use when you only need audio from a video (music, podcasts, interviews).Convert YouTube to MP3 โ
M4A
An audio container using AAC codec. Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. Used by iTunes and Apple Music. Compatible with most modern players.
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding)
The standard audio codec for YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Better compression than MP3. Typically 128-256 kbps for downloaded videos.
Opus
An open audio codec used by YouTube for WebM/Opus audio streams. Better quality than AAC at low bitrates. The default audio format when downloading high-quality YouTube content.
Lossless
Audio compressed without any quality loss (FLAC, ALAC, WAV). File sizes are 5-10ร larger than MP3. Rare for video downloads โ usually for music production or archival.
Lossy
Audio compressed by discarding inaudible data (MP3, AAC, Opus). Reduces file size at the cost of some quality. Standard for video downloads.

Region Lock (Geo-Restriction)
When a video is only available in certain countries. YouTube, TikTok, and streaming platforms enforce this via IP detection. Our downloader routes requests through the server's location, which may bypass some restrictions.

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming)
Apple's streaming protocol using segmented `.m3u8` playlists with `.ts` segments. Used by Twitch, Dailymotion, and most iOS platforms. Downloads require segment concatenation.
DRM (Digital Rights Management)

Widevine
Google's DRM system used by Chrome and Android. Protects content from Netflix, YouTube Premium, and others. Three levels: L1 (hardware), L2 (software), L3 (fallback).
FairPlay
Apple's DRM system for Safari, iOS, and tvOS. Protects Apple Music, Apple TV+, and licensed content. Most difficult DRM to bypass for downloading.
