How to Change WiFi Password on Router

Before You Start

• Connect to the WiFi network (or use Ethernet cable).
• Find your router's IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
• Know your router admin username/password (check router label or table below).
• Have a new strong password ready (12+ characters, WPA2/WPA3).

General Steps (All Routers)

1. Open a browser and enter your router's IP address.
2. Log in with admin username and password.
3. Navigate to Wireless or WiFi Settings.
4. Find Wireless Security or Security Options.
5. Select WPA2-PSK (AES) or WPA3.
6. Enter your new password/passphrase.
7. Click Save or Apply.
8. Reconnect all devices with the new password.

TP-Link Router

1. Log in at tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1.
2. Go to Wireless > Wireless Security.
3. Select WPA2-PSK (or WPA2/WPA3-Personal).
4. Enter new password in PSK Password field.
5. Click Save.

Netgear Router

1. Log in at routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1.
2. Go to Wireless > Security Options.
3. Select WPA2-PSK (AES).
4. Enter new Passphrase.
5. Click Apply.

ASUS Router

1. Log in at 192.168.1.1 or router.asus.com.
2. Go to General > Wireless.
3. Select WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal.
4. Enter new WPA Pre-Shared Key.
5. Click Apply.

Google WiFi / Nest WiFi

Google WiFi uses the Google Home app, not a web browser:

1. Open Google Home app on your phone.
2. Tap your WiFi network > Settings (gear icon).
3. Tap Edit next to WiFi password.
4. Enter new password, tap Save.
5. All points update automatically.

Forgot Router Admin Password?

If you can't log in to the router:

1. Check the router label for default credentials.
2. Try common defaults: admin/admin, admin/password, admin/(blank).
3. If none work, factory reset: Hold the reset button (usually a pinhole) for 10-30 seconds until lights flash.
4. After reset, use default credentials from the table above.
5. Warning: Factory reset erases ALL custom settings (port forwarding, DNS, etc.).

WiFi Security Best Practices

• Use WPA3 if available, otherwise WPA2-PSK (AES). Avoid WEP/WPA.
• Password: 12+ characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbols.
• Change the SSID (network name) - don't use personal info.
• Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) - security vulnerability.
