When WhatsApp stops working, it can manifest in many ways: the app won't open at all, it crashes on launch, messages won't send or receive, calls fail, notifications stop arriving, or the app freezes during use. These problems fall into four categories: connectivity issues (no internet, DNS failures, blocked networks), app-level issues (outdated version, corrupted cache, insufficient storage), permission issues (background data restricted, notifications disabled), and server-side issues (WhatsApp outages, account bans). The 12 fixes below address all four categories. Most users find their solution within the first 3 steps. For specific problems like messages not sending or calls not working, check our dedicated guides linked at the bottom.
The #1 cause of WhatsApp problems. Toggle airplane mode on for 10 seconds and back off. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Open a browser and load any website — if it fails, your connection is the problem. On Wi-Fi, try restarting your router or moving closer to it. On mobile data, check that you have signal bars and that data isn't disabled in your plan.
A full reboot clears network cache, resets DNS, closes stuck processes, and re-establishes WhatsApp's persistent server connection. Hold the power button, select Restart (or Power Off then turn on), wait for the full boot sequence, then open WhatsApp. This alone resolves roughly 40% of WhatsApp issues.
On Android: open the app switcher, swipe WhatsApp away, then reopen. On iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and swipe WhatsApp up. This is faster than a full restart and clears any stuck state. After force-closing, wait 5 seconds before reopening to let the process fully terminate.
Outdated versions may lack critical bug fixes or server protocol changes. On Android: Play Store > search WhatsApp > Update. On iPhone: App Store > profile icon > scroll to WhatsApp > Update. Enable automatic updates in your store settings to prevent this issue going forward.
On Android: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear Cache. This removes temporary files (profile photos, media thumbnails) without deleting your chats or messages. Corrupted cache is a leading cause of crashes and freezes. Do NOT tap "Clear Data" or "Clear Storage" — that erases your chat history.
WhatsApp needs at least 1GB free to function properly. Low storage causes crashes, failed downloads, and inability to send media. Check available space in Settings > Storage. Delete large files, unused apps, or old WhatsApp media (Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage inside WhatsApp).
If WhatsApp is down globally, no fix on your end will help. Visit downdetector.com/status/whatsapp or search "WhatsApp down" on Twitter/X. Major outages are rare but they happen — the October 2021 outage lasted 6 hours. If servers are down, wait for WhatsApp to resolve the issue.
On Android: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Data Usage > enable "Background data." Also Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Notifications > enable all notification types. On iPhone: Settings > WhatsApp > Background App Refresh > enable. Without these, WhatsApp cannot receive messages when you're not actively using it.
On Android: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Battery > select "Unrestricted." Battery optimization aggressively kills background apps, which prevents WhatsApp from maintaining its persistent connection. This is the most common reason for delayed messages on Android.
WhatsApp relies on accurate timestamps for message delivery and encryption. If your phone's clock is wrong, WhatsApp may fail silently. Go to Settings > Date and Time and enable "Set automatically" (or "Use network-provided time"). An incorrect time zone can also cause issues.
As a last resort before contacting support, uninstall WhatsApp, restart your phone, and reinstall from the Play Store or App Store. Before uninstalling, back up your chats: WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Back Up. During reinstallation, verify your number and restore the backup when prompted.
Some networks — corporate offices, schools, hotels, and certain ISPs — block WhatsApp traffic. A VPN encrypts your connection so the network cannot detect or filter WhatsApp. This fixes issues where WhatsApp works on mobile data but not on specific Wi-Fi networks.
WhatsApp won't open at all
Force-close, clear cache, restart phone (Fixes 2-5)
Messages stuck on one tick
Check internet, check if blocked (Fix 1, see /whatsapp-messages-not-sending)
Not receiving messages
Enable background data + notifications, disable battery optimization (Fixes 8-9)
Calls not connecting
Check speed, grant permissions, disable Bluetooth (see /whatsapp-calls-not-working)
App keeps crashing
Clear cache, free storage, update or reinstall (Fixes 5-6, 4, 11)
Works on data but not Wi-Fi
Network is blocking WhatsApp — use a VPN (Fix 12)
If WhatsApp works on mobile data but not on certain Wi-Fi networks, a VPN encrypts your traffic so the network cannot detect and block it. NordVPN works reliably with WhatsApp messaging, calls, and media sharing on restricted networks.
